Marketing Is Getting Easier to Automate… Which Makes This One Thing More Valuable

Powerful marketing tools are moving into everyday workflows. The real advantage is knowing what those tools should help your business accomplish.

If you run a small business, you could look at this week’s marketing news and come away with one conclusion: AI is about to do everything.

Google can create business graphics inside Workspace. Adobe can bring more than 70 creative tools into Slack. Google is pushing Search campaigns further into AI Max. AI assistants are becoming advertising channels. Creator campaigns are being evaluated not only by people, but by whether AI systems understand and cite them.

But there is a more useful lesson hiding underneath all of it.

Making marketing assets is getting easier. Knowing what those assets should say, who they should reach, why someone should trust them, and what should happen after somebody responds is becoming more valuable.

Creative Software Is Disappearing Into the Workflow

Adobe introduced Adobe for Slack on September 2, bringing more than 70 tools, including Photoshop, Premiere, Firefly, Lightroom, Illustrator and Acrobat, directly into Slack.

A team can discuss a project, then ask Slackbot to use that context to create or adapt images, videos and documents.

The creative tool is no longer a separate destination. It is becoming part of the conversation where the work is already happening.

Everyday Business Tools Are Becoming Easier to Direct

Google is moving in the same direction. New Gemini voice features let users talk to Gmail, Docs and Keep to find information, draft documents and organize ideas.

That can save time, but speaking a request more quickly does not remove the need to know what you are asking for or why it matters.

Advertising Is Becoming More Automated Too

Google began moving eligible Search campaigns using Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match into AI Max this month.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate by August 31.

Automation can make it easier to create and place advertising. A business still needs to judge the quality of the leads, the sales those leads produce and whether the campaign is actually profitable.

Your Content May Now Have Two Audiences

Digiday reports that agencies and businesses are beginning to evaluate creators based partly on whether their work appears inside AI-generated answers.

A useful YouTube video, product demonstration, interview, comparison or article might not only reach the person watching today. It can potentially become information an AI system encounters when somebody asks a related question later.

Clear, useful content can help a customer today while also making it easier for AI systems to understand what your business knows.

Human Credibility May Become More Valuable

AI can imitate polish very quickly. It has a much harder time replacing years of experience, real customer stories, specific opinions, original photographs, demonstrations and firsthand knowledge.

That is good news for small businesses.

The new marketing advantage is judgment. When everybody has access to powerful tools, the advantage moves toward knowing the customer, knowing what problem actually matters, knowing which story is worth telling, knowing what looks trustworthy and knowing what deserves to be automated.

What Small Businesses Should Do This Week

Answer one real customer question.

Pick a question your business hears constantly and create the best answer you can. Use real experience, examples, photographs or video.

Build from strong source material.

Use AI to help turn that useful answer into other formats, without replacing the experience and proof that made the original valuable.

Measure what reaches the business.

Audit automated advertising using actual lead quality and sales, not only clicks, views or the numbers the platform puts first.

Make your business easier to understand.

Improve the clarity of your website, document your marketing process and keep a human responsible for the final decision.

The Bigger Lesson

The Advantage Is Knowing Where AI Actually Helps

The businesses that win the next stage of marketing will probably not be the ones using the most AI.

They will be the ones that know where AI actually helps, where human experience matters and how each piece should move a customer toward greater understanding and trust.
